Glass Naval Memorial installation at the National Arboretum, Staffordshire
A prestigious and high-profile commission for a national memorial. The brief, from Proto Studios, was to supply the specialist glass lamination process for a National Naval Memorial, a screen-printed outdoor art installation.
Working with and laminating an oversized and irregular, heavy glass panel. The outdoor siting of the installation also meant we had to overcome vulnerability to delamination and fading, due to the exposed edges.
The screen printed design, colours and unusual thickness (15mm toughened glass) combined with the awkward and irregular size and shape created interesting challenges to the SGL production team. Shaped panels required expert handling due to weight and an unpredictable centre of gravity. Using tilt tables and our SGL workshop overhead crane, the panels were prepared and filled using Safeguard Resin, with high flow rates maintained through use of a mechanical pump dispenser. Unlike most PVB based laminates the exposed edges of our Safeguard resin are moisture resistant and therefore exceptionally resistant to delamination.
SGL products used: Safeguard 2mm CIP Structural Resin Interlayer.
